Elementary Curriculum
At FLOW, our curriculum builds solid foundations in reading, writing, mathematics, and Czech—then puts them to work in authentic projects.
Czech Across the School
Space for language, thinking, and self-expression
Stage 1 and Stage 2
In our first and second grades, we establish the fundamentals of Czech literacy through phonic instruction and daily reading practices. Students progress at their own pace, building confidence alongside fluency. We prepare all students for entrance exams with specific support and targeted practice.
Entrance-Exam Readiness
We understand that preparing for entrance exams is important. Our curriculum includes systematic preparation for these assessments, integrated naturally throughout the year so that students feel confident when test day arrives.
Project-Based Learning
Real work, real audience, real growth
What This Builds
- Thinking: Students learn to ask questions, analyse problems, and find creative solutions.
- Communication: Working in projects means explaining ideas clearly to peers, teachers, and audiences.
- Collaboration: Real projects require teamwork, negotiation, and learning from others.
- Motivation: Knowing their work has a real purpose drives deeper engagement than worksheets ever could.
What You'll See
Students presenting their work to real audiences, whether that's a class exhibition, a school assembly, or community members. They'll bring home project portfolios showing not just the final product, but the journey of learning behind it. Over the course of a year, expect to see roughly 10 substantial projects that weave together curriculum strands and real-world relevance.
Mathematics
Hejny's mathematics: Learning through discovery
How We Teach Maths
- Students explore patterns and relationships before memorising formulas.
- Manipulatives and visual models help concrete understanding develop into abstract thinking.
- Problem-solving comes first; drilling comes when it serves real understanding.
- Mixed-age grouping and differentiation ensure every student is challenged at their level.
Why It Matters
When children understand the "why" behind mathematics, they develop confidence and resilience. They see maths not as a set of rules to follow, but as a language for understanding the world. This deeper engagement leads to stronger retention, more flexible problem-solving, and genuine enjoyment of mathematical thinking.
Comenia Script
We teach Czech handwriting using Comenia Script, which supports the transition from print to cursive writing in a way that aligns with how children naturally develop fine-motor control. This careful approach to handwriting helps foster pride in written work.
Cross-Curricular Links
- History and Geography: Integrated into projects that help students understand their world and place in it.
- Science: Hands-on inquiry-based learning, from life cycles to states of matter.
- Art and Music: Not add-ons, but essential ways of expressing understanding and developing creativity.
- Physical Education: Builds fitness, coordination, and a lifelong love of movement.
What Parents Will Notice
- Children excited to talk about what they're learning, asking "why" questions that show genuine curiosity.
- Strong foundations in reading and maths, demonstrated through both formal assessments and real-world application.
- A child who sees themselves as capable, creative, and collaborative—not just academically, but as a thinker and contributor.
